Is there a simple way to remux AVI to MP4 without converting, or am I stuck with using Handbrake?

It depends on the video track content of the AVI - if it's encoded with MS-MPEG4 (or, highly unlikely unless it's a camera video AVI, M-JPEG), you can't remux at all. If it's MPEG-4 ASP, you should give a try to avidemux 2.6.

If you have a Mac, installing the latter isn't as trivial as under Win, unfortunately. (Don't go with the much inferior 2.5!) Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks, unfortunately by the time you'd replied I'd spent the 12 or so hours it took to transcode it in Handbrake. The good news is that it works fine and so does the audio track on my AppleTV, this seems a bit hit and miss as to whether I get stereo or 5.1 but this seemed to work.
