I cannot go to an apple store (3 hours drive)

Call Apple and tell them BestBuy did not offer you the option to purchase it and you would like to add it to your new iPhone.
Or go back to BestBuy and purchase it.

If they give you a hard time about "needs to be purchased with iPhone" you can do a return rebuy.

For those that live over 50 miles from any Apple store, you can call and obtain the AppleCare +. Just make sure you talk to an AppleCare + rep and not the normal sales department.

800-275-2273 (AppleCare +)

Best Buy to my knowledge does not sell AppleCare +

best buy does NOT offer applecare.

They have their own thing, which sounded good until I asked "what happens when I need a repair"

"well we send your phone off to get fixed, and you get a loaner phone, usually an android, in the meantime"

nope.

+1 OP, follow this advice, and do it sooner rather than later.
