They're backwards compatible and the same price. You're fine with either. You just don't want to buy too little power. Eg. 45w adapter cause they're not upwards compatible.

The 17" MacBook Pro requires a lot of power.

If you're used to a 60w, it should charge faster.

One is bigger. Made for larger laptops.

Take it into an apple store and get a genius to look at it. If there are signs of charring or burns, they may give you a brand new charger for free. Ifvyou have one of the older t-style mag safes, they're known for having issues.

85W is meant for 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. 60W is meant for MacBooks and 13" MacBook Pros. 45W is meant solely for MacBook Airs regardless of size. 85W MagSafes will, in theory, charge and power every Mac laptop. 60W will, in theory, only power 15" and 17" MacBook Pros, while being able to power and charge everything else. You might find that a 60W Magsafe will charge a 15" or 17" MacBook Pro, albeit substantially slower than an 85W. I don't know about the 45W adapter as that one I'm pretty sure only should be used with the MacBook Air.

Given that your machine is a 17" MacBook Pro (Mid 2009), you should go with the 85W MagSafe and nothing else. If you're further confused, just look at the box and it'll tell you which computers it is compatible with.

No worries. There is one exception that I forgot to mention. If you have a 15" MacBook Pro from the Mid 2009 generation and it has a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo and ONLY an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (and NOT an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT alongside it), the proper charger for that machine is a 60W MagSafe. Again, as is the case with all 13" MacBook Pros and MacBooks, you can power and charge said Mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro with the 85W, but due to the lack of the discrete graphics processor in that model, Apple only included a 60W adapter and as such only a 60W adapter is required for powering and charging that particular 15" MacBook Pro. For all other 15" and 17" MacBook Pros, 85W is your best bet.
