iPhone 5:iMessage problem

So on my iphone 5 imessage only works if I'm on 3G,as soon as i leave 3G for wifionly(like at home) it just simply doesn't send or receive at all,all of this while having a working wifi connection(can use safari,app store everything that uses data),is there anything i can do?i've tried resetting the toggle on messages but i get the same thing over and over
