obviously we haven't been given this information yet, but by looking at BTO configurations for other macs, perhaps we can deduce them?

I'm specifically curious about the upgrades to the stock 27" high end model (RAM, HDD/SDD options, CPU, & GPU)

CPU:
base = 3.2GHz quad i5
upgrade = 3.4GHz quad i7
best guess cost = $350
rationale = comparing it the upgrade cost for the 15" rMBP 2.3 quad i7 to a 2.7 quad i7, I'm afraid this cost might actually be more like $500 when it comes down to it bc we're going from i5 to i7 here.

GPU
base = 675MX
upgrade = 680MX
best guess cost = $200
rationale = this one is probably the toughest to determine as all the other macs with mobile GPUs have no upgrade option. However, looking at the Mac Pro upgrade options, we see that the ballpark is $200-$250. I'd venture a guess that apple will try to keep this price point if at all possible.

RAM
base = 8GB (two 4GB) 1600MHz DDR3
upgrade = 32GB (four 8GB) 1600MHz DDR3
best guess cost = $600 ($200 for each 8GB SODIMM)
rationale = the 15" rMBP costs $200 to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB of the same type of RAM, this is probably pretty close to accurate pricing for the iMac as well.

HDD/SDD options
base = 1TB 7200RPM HDD
upgrade-1 = 3TB fusion drive
best guess cost-1 = $750
rationale-1 = in the Mac mini line, upgrading from a 1TB 5400RPM HDD to a 1TB Fusion drive is $250, I'm tripling this number and I think that's a conservative estimate (I'm sure the upgrade to a 1TB fusion is more like $250)
upgrade-2 = 768 GB SDD
best guess cost-2 = $1000
rationale-2 = in the Mac Pro line upgrading from (probably) the same 1TB 7200RPM HDD to a 512 SDD is $850. I'm wagering that to bump it to 768GB SDD is $1000 (apple likes round numbers)


this is all speculation obviously, but it's looking like a fully upgraded BTO 27" will be something like $1999 + $1000 (768 GB SDD) + $600 (32GB RAM) + $200 (680MX GPU) + $350 (3.4 quad i7 CPU) = $4149

pretty sure that's a lowball number too.

the 2011 mac upgrade was £160 (about $200 i guess) from i5 to i7, can't see that changing much, its already a rediculous premium for what is a base i5.

the gpu was about £100 for upgrade from 1gb to 2 gb on 2011 model, I recon this will be about £50 more expensive due to being a unreleased spec new model nvidia graphics.

increasing BTO prices on other things slightly to compensate that the macs ship with 8gb ram (even though ram is dirt cheap at the moment).

HDD..

something silly I imagine.. but I would like...

£100 for 128gb hybrid, on imac, I mean come on, SSD is cheap as chips nowadays...

£200 for 2tb.

786gb SSD, probably looking at £500 minimum. (would be nice to see this spread over 2 drives, 512, 256, so IOS, then applications or scratch drive seperate...


hoping BTO isn't that ridiculous as the models already have a £100 price hike for what is a small processor upgrade and a cheap ram upgrade, personally don't care about new design, yes its nice, but would I rather have of seen them make an effort getting better tech into the old shape. Yes without a doubt.

I would of killed to see them take out the optical drive and fit a desktop GPU and a dual SSD/HD in as standard

I'm pissed that they didn't offer a 512 SSD which would have been a sweet spot for me.

You KNOW they are going to take the piss with the price of the 768 ...

If I recall correctly, in one place it says "up to 768..." So I'm not so sure that one is the ONLY option based on that, I'll try and find it and be back!

EDIT: Well... it's not much, but on this page it says "up to": http://www.apple.com/imac/features/

You may just be right!

I just recall him saying "or a 768gb SSD" in the keynote but maybe that was simply an an error on his part? I hope so ...

I tell you what, though ... that iMac looks so sexy in the images on that page, right?!

looks like I overestimated Apple's greed with the CPU and GPU upgrades, was spot on (easy one) with the RAM upgrade, and was a bit too conservative in my pricing for the Storage upgrades (although I did the get 1TB Fusion price right)

I'm still surprised by the $1300 ssd upgrade price.

Holy cow!

For $4149, that's a
1. base iMac 21.5" and
2. base Macbook 15" retina and
3. iPad retina 32GB and
4. iPod shuttle

But I guess some people opt for the best of one thing vs the base model of many.

it was more of a guessing game when I made this thread. not really what I intend to spend
