I will order the ram from a third party reseller, much cheaper than what Apple quotes for 16GB (8x2 sticks of 1600)

This will Replace my old and trusty 1,1 first gen Mac Pro 2.66 model with 16GB of ram.

Amazing what 6 years does in terms of performance per watt and size. The 1.1 generated quite a bit of heat was big on wattage (upper 400's)

I just ordered the mid level mini with 2.6ghz option. Stock HD but I have a 256ssd that I will hopefully be able to stick in there alongside the regular HD. Also will be putting in RAM myself. It'll be replacing my 2010 13" MBP with a fubar cpu fan that has stayed on my desk hooked to my display ever since I got an ipad, so with no need for a laptop anymore I think the mini will do just fine.

That's the configuration I want, too! But as I don't have the money, I'll stick with the standard hard drive and probably buy a Thunderbolt SSD at a later point as these drives also go faster.

Just don't know about 2,3 or 2,6 GHz now ... I'm a power user and could need every bit of power, but as there's no discrete GPU I might have to upgrade in two years instead of my usual three, so I don't want to spend too much money on it ...

2.3 i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial. Both due to arrive Friday...

I debated going with the 2.6 i7 but a 10% speed increase isn't worth it for me.

I would have picked whichever model had discrete graphics, since I boot into Windows to play games on the big TV sometimes with my current 2011, and I wanted one for the guest room.

Since none (!) of the new models has real video, I ordered another 2011 with Radeon 6630 from the refurb page for $549 instead.

(They're sold out now, so I'm guessing a lot of other people used the same calculus.)

2.6Ghz Quad - I figure this is the must-max piece, and the price is right.
4GB RAM - Which I will upgrade asap, at non-Apple prices.
1TB HDD 5400rpm - Which will be accompanied by a 256GB SSD as soon as I get confirmation that two drives will fit, and that the iFixit kit still works. If not, it will be replaced by the same SSD.

Really hope they ship it soon. I hope they saw a bunch of these orders coming and have already pre-built a lot of these.

i got the same as you and most others. are you planning on waiting to install your SSD if and when ifixit says their kit is still good for 2012. im debating just throwing in my SSD when i get it since the OS will go on there either way, and just leaving the 1TB out as a external, dont know if its worth the hassle taking it all apart to put it back in plus pay for the kit

I think you are taking a chance on the fusion drive. I would not have done this.

I am in your boat I will certainly use a thunderbolt external ssd. I am debating on the 2.6 or the 2.3 mid level.

1TB HDD> (Putting a 256GB SDD in and the 1TB in a USB 3.0 enclosure for downloads etc)

Was going to do dual HDD, but USB 3.0 made it easier, least I can take it out and bring it around.

Me too. I think I'll go with the 2,3 GHz to get a little bit of a bigger cost advantage to the high end iMac.

Might well do just that, but I am keen on having the big drive internal. I have a lot of podcasts in iTunes, and that really crowds a poor 256GB drive. I don't want a system that I can't run without an external drive.

I ordered the base 2.5-GHz mini with no upgrades. I'm going to use it primarily for internet and email and hope that the 4-GB of memory is adequate. Otherwise I'll upgrade from Crucial. I still need a DVD drive on occasion, so I ordered an Asus external from Amazon for $32.00 plus tax. The Mac Mini and DVD drive both arrive on Thursday. This will be my first Apple computer, so I'm looking forward to this.

so 869 tax is 7% and my discover card discount is 5% so just over 885

for the better cpu. or 795 if I get the 2.3 cpu.

I am going to sell a base 2011 model on ebay. to help pay for it.

I ordered a 2,3 GHz model now. Just can't go over paying nearly as much as for the high-end iMac while loosing the graphics card. With 778 incl. Tax (Edu-price) + 70 for 16 GB RAM + 870 for the Thunderbolt Display I'm quite happy.

I've almost the same Mac Pro and will probably be buying the same Mini.

I wonder if it will be faster doing simple video editing.

I have two PCs where I am doing something similar (Intel SRT) + Velociraptors (1TB models) And its been reliable and fast as heck, running for 24/7 service for quite some time.

Fusion seems like a nice enhancement in the way of SRT but in a transparent matter (ie no messing with BIOS,SRT drivers etc..)

I have time machine running on an external FW800 setup for my 06 box so it will be doing the same on the new mini.

According to Geekbench, the 2,6 GHz Mini is double as fast as the first gen, quad-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro.

I ordered the 2.6 Ghz quad core and upgraded to the Fusion Drive. I also ordered 16GB of Corsair Extreme RAM from Amazon for $89.99 ($210 less than Apple wanted to max out the RAM).

What will be really interesting is if OWC can prove if it can take 32GB of RAM.

i contemplated the fusion drive but decided that i like to have things organized my way, and dont know enough about how it works to not go with throwing in a 256 SSD for less than 200

Most of my desktop use is for e-mail, web and photos (mainly saving). Gaming is limited and done on the iPad. I'm currently using a 5 year old Dell so this will probably be a huge upgrade. I really want the new Thunderbolt display (iMac) but don't want the cost that goes along with it.

What do you guys think about the Fusion Drive?
