In Design compatibility problems

We have 2 macs in our office.
One of them is runing In Design (v3) and the other is running v4.

We can't open version 4 documents in version 3.
(but it works the other way around)

Any suggestions, advice, help?

We do not have the money to fork out for an upgrade.

Not too sure about v4, but you could try using File...Export... and choosing InDesign Interchange as the format (I think thats what its called anyway). It works in v3 when saving work for use in v2.
