DVD and Scratches

Bought Mad Men series one and two from a second hands goods store for £10 - bargain.

Put the first disk in my PS3 and played it, and the screen went black and I had to reset the PlayStation. Took it out, and noticed a couple of scratches on the disk, nothing major, but they were there. I tried it again in the PS3 and it's working fine now.

Just curious as to whether the disk would have cause the PS3 to 'hang', or was it just the PS3? And how many scratches would a DVD need to have before it stopped working? A couple of fine ones wouldn't matter, would it?
