viewing time references in iMovie + animating videos

Hi there, I'm a complete newbie at editing video so would be grateful if someone could advice on the following:

1. I've been working in iMovie today (for the first time) creating small video clips out of longer segments of video. However, when I select segments out of the string of 5second thumbnails, I can't manage to find a way to display the time reference. For example, how can I identify the thumbnail section that belongs 5 minutes and 30 seconds into the original file?

2. I'm a researcher and use video to collect my research material. Due to confidentiality agreements with my informants, I can't show the raw data at international conferences etc as is. Therefore, in order to protect people's identities I'm looking for options for

a) blurring the faces of people
b) animating videos and/or still pictures

What kind of software can I use to do this?
