Using Mail App for first time

I am finally using the mail app on my iMac and it is not necessary to load the 50,000 plus emails since 2008 from my hotmail account. The Mail is importing all old emails and I would rather it not do so.

How do you set preferences so that it starts only from recent emails?

There are no preference settings for this. You need to, within your hotmail account, either delete or move or archive those older messages to another folder, then only synch the inbox

I just download them all to my Mail, then archive them, then delete them off the microsoft server

Mail recognises them as mail that it hasn't downloaded before, so will download them.
