Amd is not AMD

Recently, MacSlash and AppleTurns posted stories pointing to Amd support documented at Apple's website for Mac OS X Jaguar.

While many of you realize that this is simply referencing the automound daemon (amd), we are still getting submissions on this topic.

So, for the last time: Amd = Automount Daemon.

Well, I asked the genius at the genius bar and he used the RED PHONE. The answer I got from him after he was done using the phone was that Amd was some type of font support. I just thought I'd say what I heard from Apple itself.

The RED PHONE? What is that? I've never seen it in my trips to the store. Is it to call the head office or super genius? Tech support for the tech support.....

If I read the article correctly, As the Apple Turns was mocking someone who submitted a story idea. And if they took that literallly, then they are, well, stupid.

Is AppleTurns stupid or are the people who interpret it this way stupid?

Regardless... I know AppleTurns doesn't fancy itself a rumor page, but it does occasionally post things like this... and people take it seriously. If enough people interpret it as such, whose fault is it?

I'm sure MacSlash's story was inspired by AppleTurns' post.

OMG, well geez, wow. I feel like saying "How can you NOT know about the red phone?" Well, the red phone is behind the island at the genius bar, on the counter where they set some computers.. The genius can use the red phone to call Apple to find an answer to question. This was the first time I've seen the genius use the phone. Usually they give me some b/s about going to a web site and finding the answer and of looking it up. If you looked at the movies of the originally Apple Stores, you would've heard Steve's remarks about the phone. But, yes it is tech support for the tech support.

AppleTurns was dissing the guy

AtAT didn't take it seriously.

This is at the end of the episode:
Do we really need to include a link to the definition of "irony" every time we do something like this?

He was probably talking about ATM (Adobe Type Manager).

Not until Pierre Salinger holds a press conference with "undeniable proof" from a the blog of a cousin who's friend's sister's aunt saw an Athlon chip next to a crate of Spartans. Then we can say it's over.

This is a lot closer to AppleTurn's story on the framistan than one of their rumors. They weren't rumor mongering; they were pointing out something that already existed on Apple's site.

Seems like Macrumors is hostile to AppleTurns lately, I guess ever since they claimed they were the only ones to predict a superdrive before finding out Macrumors did it.

I'm personally not hostile towards AppleTurns... but they do need to work on their sarcasm. And, like I said... they may not think they are a rumor site - but their readers do...

Apparently people don't read the AppleTurns Disclaimer:

AtAT is not a news site any more than "Inside Edition" is a "real" news show. We make "Dawson's Creek" look like "60 Minutes." We engage in rampant guesswork, wild speculation, and pure fabrication for the entertainment of our viewers. Sure, everything here is "inspired by actual events," but so was "Amityville II: The Possession." So lighten up.
With the new baby and all, some of us gave them a little slack... some didn't. Not that anyone has been too mean to them. I think we're just spoiled by how good this site is.

I mean, come on. It's not like they're MacOSRumors.

Cool egad

People- let's move onto something else...ATAT is joshing and they are providing funny tidbits...geez...has the processors wars done this to us? Tearing and clawing at anything that is mentioned about Apple's processor strategy? I just stopped worrying and have learned to love the G4. And the next processor...i will love that one when it comes out.

Some clarifications

Hey, folks, Jack from AtAT here. I probably won't be hanging around much (heck, I don't even have time to post in the AtAT Forums), but I thought I should duck in just to clear up a couple of things.

1) Yes, the Amd vs. AMD thing was a gag. I've been saying forever that x86-based Macs just aren't going to happen unless the non-Apple PowerPC partners get vaporized by invading alien hordes. I know what amd is; heck, I've used UNIX for quite a bit longer than I've used Macs. (Although I'll admit that I haven't had to mess with amd for maybe seven or eight years, now, and even when I did, I never had all that much luck.)

Unfortunately, the irony was apparently WAY too subtle (must be losing my touch), which is why I'm doing a follow-up in today's scene, which will probably go out at maybe 5 AM EST.

2) About that "first to predict PowerBooks with SuperDrives" thing-- what I actually said was that "the entire rumor community" thought otherwise, which was meant to be an exaggeration, but even so, I was definitely NOT aware that MacRumors had reiterated the SuperDrive prediction just days before. And when I was told, I did a whole scene publicly apologizing to MacRumors for the oversight:

Did We Miss Anyone Else? (11/6/02)
http://www.appleturns.com/scene/?id=3822

Indeed, I was kinda hoping to see the apology mentioned on MacRumors, but hey, no biggie. :-)

Hope that's clearer. 'Kay?

And no, AtAT is not a rumors site. ;-)

Heh... Hey Jack....

Thanks for the post... like I said, I have no hard feelings towards AtAT.... and sorry about not posting a reference to the apology... but you know - pre announcement day... always crazy.

As for this thread - again - didn't mean to look like I was being bitter or anything... but after the nth email "hey... did u see that Jaguar has Amd support" - I had to post a clarification.

Congrats on the baby...

Agreed, and congrats on the new baby ATAT.

If it makes you feel any better, I thought it was funny.

AMD the chipmaker is having problems with their latest releases and keeping up with intel

their stock took a hit and things will look better once AMD takes their athlon XP past the 3 ghz range or equivalent
