What happened to that sound

Previously when I hit the microphone icon to 'talk' a text it would make a noise. All of a sudden the noise is so faint I can't hear it at all.
I can find no place to adjust this. My volume is all the way up.
I swear sometimes this phone (4s) makes me nuts. LOL

Are other system sounds quiet as well? If you have recently used Maps for directions, other system sounds lower in volume. If you close the app through the app switcher it should return sounds to normal. Otherwise another app that recently streamed music might be causing the same thing.

Ask Siri a question and while the Siri is open turn the volume up, Siri and Dictation have the same volume control and they are separate from all other system sounds.

Edit: or just hit the dictation button on the keyboard and turn the volume up, either way works.
