Why Word 2004 and Word 2008 page count discrepancy

Can anyone explain why i get wildly different page counts on the same file opened in Word 2004 vs 2008? It was created on Word 2004, and ran 312 pages. When I opened it on Word 2008, it ballooned up to about 360+ pages. More importantly, is there any settings I can make to ensure that opening the 2004 file in Word 2008 will yield the same number of pages? I am using snow leopard.

Microsoft Office-compatibility is a contradiction in terms. That said, there is no way do anything other than guess about why your document yields different page counts in Word 2004 and Word 2008 without access to a copy of the file.
