iMessage vs Viber

I have an iPod touch 3G and just wanted to know which is better for messaging (not calling). My friend and I have accounts on both and we want to decide which one to make our medium for chatting.

iMessage. It's the stock Apple app, meaning it gets iCloud syncing across devices, and it's quick and simple.

iMessage must be good but I think Viber is much better than iMessage. This is the best for chating and moreover you can user it on any phone like android.

Let's not forget that Viber is a obscure company based in the middle east that recently was flagged for their app's privacy issues. Turns out they are taking user contact list and telephone information, storing to their servers for an indefinite amount of time.

Privacy 101 or Why You Should Not Use iPhone App Viber

Not to deter anyone from a great service, I'm sure. Just a PSA because people should know. Bottom line is that nothing is free. The majority of free services use your personal information for marketing purposes, including Google. If you're ok with that, then proceed.

Hi there,

I am an official representative of Viber. We are here in MacRumors to assist our users and address their doubts and concerns.

Regarding the privacy concerns raised here:

@Ghostbusters -

First, it is important to be accurate – we only collect names and phone numbers, nothing else. Naturally, we collect users' information not because we are curious of its content nor for commercial purposes, but only for functional reasons, and in order for us to enable the service we, as a company, promise to provide. Without that information, Viber cannot function. This is not different from any other major social network/communication service provider in our world nowadays.

I would like to clarify: we *do not* and will never sell users' information to third-parties, and we keep this information well locked in our servers, with extremely limited access to it. This information (in great detail) is explained in our very clear and transparent Privacy Policy - to which we are committed by law - that can be found in our official homepage. Have you taken a close look at it?

If after reading it carefully there are still doubts or questions, then we will be more than happy to assist and clarify and answer any of them.

As per the blog you linked to - please read the official comments by our CEO, Mr. Talmon Marco, addressing the blog author's and users' concerns.

Lastly, about your claim that Viber being a company based in the Middle East: Viber is based in Cyprus with development facilities in Israel and Belarus. Servers are all over the world, but the ones storing the data (the "database") are in the US

Israel is the source of many high-tech startups and (very) respected companies, some of whose technology you are using on a daily basis. It is not our wish to advocate for Israel in anyway, just to place it in its right place in the technological world

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,
the Viber Team.

Israel? No doubt.
Cyprus? Debatable, I could see both sides.
Belarus? You need to double check your globe. I think it may be defective.

True. Cyprus is debatable... And my bad, in my mind I was thinking of Bahrain and not Belarus. My globe is definitely defective.

Since their privacy policy is in order, here's a link for all those wanting to try Viber! http://viber.com/itunes
