Just got my first iPad. What are the obligatory apps?

Hello,
Just unboxed my new iPad 4.
A real thing of beauty. Already typing from it.
Just did the initial setup and went to the settings and configured the basics.

This is my first iOS device ever, so I am a bit lost here...
What are the must have apps either free or payed for the iPad?

I just downloaded Dropbox, Evernote, eBay app and pulse news.
Apps I already know.

So, what do you guys use and recommend?

Cheers!

It really depends on what you plan to use it for. Some of my favorite apps so far are:

Free:

- Dead Trigger

- I Books

- Crackle

Paid:

- Garage Band

- Pages

- Real Racing

Also, keep and eye on appshopper.com. It will tell you when a paid app goes free or when apps go on sale.

Good start with DropBox, Pulse and EBay

Other freebies I use frequently:

Amazon
Amazon Instant Video
IMDB
Netflix
Twitter (1st party client)
Facebook
Podcasts (Apple)
DirecTV
Flickster
LinkedIn
iBooks (Apple)
Kindle
Wikipanion
Remote (Apple)

Obviously some of those require paid services, but the app is free. My other heavy daily use is in OOTB apps like Email, Messages, Safari, Calendar, Reminders, Videos.

Everything at our home/office is connected via Home Sharing so our iPads have access to our pretty stout library of movies and music.

Also keep an eye out of the Free App of the Day, been some good ones, and some of the app monitoring sites that let you know when prices drop.

Cheapies ($1-3) I use pretty frequently:

PlainText
Notability
CamViewer
Comics
Instapaper

Games? Tons of good ones, kind of depends what you like, but our current favorites are: Lost Winds 1 and 2, Paper Monsters and Real Racing 2 HD

I like having Readability & Skype is alright. TuneIn Radio & HiDef Radio haven't been mentioned, and Rowmote Pro in case you have an iMac or MB you'd like to control with your iPad as a remote

Wow. Thanks for all the input! I'll check these apps out.
Already plenty to keep me busy.
Just another question.
I saw on some videos, weather information on the drop down notifications. But my ipad does not have it.
How do I enable that?

So far, loving the device. Such a great feel and balance in the hands. And that display...

Cheers

That one that looks like a pint of beer and then when you tilt the ipad the liquid moves and you sort of pretend to drink from it but your not actually as its an illusion but it looks like your drinking a pint.

Brilliant with the retina display.

Probably all you need really.

Enjoy the iPad4, it is aces.

Do not load too many apps, the more you have the less sleep you will get.

Hi.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
How about the question I posted earlier about the weather on the notification?
What application does that?

Cheers

I don't think the weather widget is available on the iPad. It's not listed in my Settings > Notifications on my iPad, only on my iPhone.

So, any good free weather app for the ipad? Preferably without adds.

Thanks.

I use weather channel app for iPad.

There is no stock widget either on the 4. I use yahoo market dash, it is free and good enough for me.

Flipboard is great. One I haven't seen mentioned yet is infinity blade. If you like those sort of games you'll love it like I do. Also bad piggies, tiny wings, scribblenauts, nba jam, plants vs zombies, abc player, NBC.

Living earth is phenomenal. I don't think it's free...maybe a buck or two. Until I found it I never used anything other than the stock weather app...or for more specific Wx forecast, the browser (I prefer iCab on the iPad 4--Mercury in the Mini) through weather.com. If you can swing the dollar bill though, Living earth is awesome!

As I mentioned, for a browser on the iPad 4--iCab is and has been ,u choice for three years. Awesome gesture support, an on board downloading set up, incredible third party support...Atomic is good as well, check out the free version on Mercury

I couldn't live without Early Edition. My morning newspaper. It's an RSS program the literally 'draws up' a morning paper each day. I use it every morning. During the day I use Flipboard for up to date news

For my magazines Newsstand from Apple and I subscribe to a half dozen rags through Zinio.

I like XPlane's simulators. There are a half dozen of them. I like the retro games on the Midway arcade (I'm 41)...some of the sports games are cool...including Madden, Tiger Woods, and NBA Jam. If you're a soccer fan, FIFA is phenomenal. Tons and tons of cool games regardless of your interest. Diablo type dungeon crawlers, MMO type, RPG, racing, casual, casino...you name it, every board game we've played--I like monopoly and risk.

EverNote is invaluable. As well, it's been mentioned...the iWork suite; Pages, Numbers, and Keynote ;works with MS formats too: export or import .doc(x), xls(x?), and ppt. I use Bento daily for my business.

If you're the creative type and enjoy makin music check out GarageBand, the Korg synths, Nano Studio...Moog, the list goes on

Avid and iMovie are must haves if you shoot video with your iPhone. iPhoto and Photoshop of you're a photographer....this is just the crust. The list is really long with photography and video production applications.

Kindle, Nook, and iBooks. Pending where your collection resides. If you have a preference or digital book collection. If not, I prefer iBooks and Apple's prices are decent. Kindle has a huge library though (Amazon).

Congrats! You're going to love it! It's an amazing machine and the best one yet!

I'd echo what someone else said, I big part of the answer has to depend on what you want to use your iPad for. That said...

Absolutely, on this one. This gives you at least some of the capabilities of An actual filesystem.

my favorite, of those that I've used, is called Weather Bug. While it does have ads, they aren't too obnoxious.

In the category of video apps, I'd recommend, in addition to Netflix, which several others have mentioned (if you have a Netflix account):

AirVideo - lets you stream videos from your local computers, regardless of format (the server software will live-convert incompatible files to a compatible format before streaming them to your iPad)
AVPlayerHD - a great player for playing non-mp4 videos, when you want to load them on your iPad to watch on the to...

I use Flipboard and YouPlayer (since iPad doesn't have YouTube app yet) a lot. Downcast is also great though I use that on my phone more than my iPad.
