Whatsapp but it sucks big time on WP.
Try groupme. |

Skype is in beta form on WP8. Don't forget live messenger is built in the messaging app.

I have kik messenger on my WP. Can't really say how it does on WP8 because I haven't used it yet since I got a new phone.

If you want cross platform, I'd use skype. It is on every platform and it offers every form of messaging (voice, text, video) and it is free on all platforms.
It's a little weird on WP8 right now. It works well on my 920 though. Notifications take some getting used to, but my skype stuff is showing up on my "me" tile. My only beef with Skype is as they update, they make it unusable on jailbroken iPhones.

You want non-ams, right? better question is, what do your friends use? The best app on WP8 won't mean jack if you don't know anyone else that uses it. That is why SMS is still going strong to this day; EVERYONE can use it.
