Samsung 840 SSD

I would like to hear your thoughts on this particular SSD. It's going for $170 on Amazon right now and I have a $150 gift card, making this a steal for me.

I know it uses TLC flash vs MLC flash, but is there really any huge difference? My iMac only has SATA II and I know the 830 is only marginally faster than the 840, so do you think I would actually notice a difference?

I'll probably be selling my iMac next year anyways, thus the longevity of the SSD isn't crucial to me.

Let me know your thoughts and opinions and happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

The 840 is really fast in read operations, so you can with it. I installed on in a friend MBP and he is really satisfied.

Remember theres a big difference in the 840 vs. the 840 Pro. I would pick the 830 over the 840, but the 840 Pro over the 830 any day.

no with sata 2 you will not notice a difference between the two. never ever. neither of them will run full speed on sata 2 but your imac will run much faster compared to a normal HDD especially applications will load much faster.

I think the only benchmark the 840 loses vs the 830 is sequential read, and that is still faster than SATA 3Gbps

In random reads and writes the 840 beats the 830. both being lower than 3Gbps

The only thing to note is that the 840 will last a bit less than the 830.

I bought 2 830s to put into my iMac not long ago around that price as well and the 840 was higher than that.

Thanks for the information! It's down to $150 on Amazon, so I think that's as cheap as it'll get for a 250GB SSD.

I know it'll have a bit of shorter life span than the 830, but I'll probably be selling my iMac when Haswell comes out anyways.
