i was just using my laptop and the whole screen turned grey and then it restarted.

it then had a message that said something like, there was an issue with the computer and it had to restart.

i'v never experienced this before, i have a base model 15 inch 2011 macbook pro.

i did a google, i think its a 'panic'?

i believe i'v got the report here, could anyone tell me if this is a hardware problem or just a software freak out?

i was using handbrake to initiate a new conversion of an mkv, i did one not long before, i am aware that handbrake leaks my 16gigs of ram to 0 free after a conversion (takes a few hours). usually i purge my ram before a compression but not always, this time i didn't.

after i did that, i went to eject the disc out of my external blu-ray drive, by dragging the disc to the trash can. but my blu ray drive did not eject. so i tried unplugging the 2nd usb (power only) and plugging it back in to re recognise the disc & device, to then try ejecting it. didnt work, so i tried unplugging the data usb and plugging it back in, which worked. then i could eject this disc. i cant actually remember if i did this first or started the compression first. im not sure which the panic occurred during.

im wondering if it was the ram that freaked out or if my mbp is physically dying?

thanks to anyone in advance who can help me.

Its called Kernel Panic.
It sometimes occurs so I wouldnt be too worried.
If it continues to do it over and over, go to the genius.

Have you updated any hardware or software very recently?

no, not to my knowledge, its atleast been a week i believe since iv updated anything. and those updates were likely from the macapp store, some minor one maybe, but whatever update it is, i don't believe iv been using the app that it wouldve updated.

my app usage has been very repetitive for a long time:

mail
itunes
dropbox
safari
adium
notes
Handbrake
make mkv
subler
metaz

others on off:

calander
contacts
reminders
iphoto.
mac app store

my last hardware updates were months ago. (ssd, 16gb ram)

when i first upgraded to mountain lion, throughout 10.8.1, i was experiencing a known freeze issue for some users, but it seems to have dissappeared since 10.8.2. or atleast over time. the last time i experienced that freeze was probably september.

i was running steam during the panic, which i dont use often, i know they updated that within a month ago.

I wouldnt be worried.
I had almost 5 times since I switched to Mountain Lion.
10.7 was worse. I had nearly 20.

It's happened to me once after switching Mountain lion and I repaired the permissions in disk utility and it never happened again.

It seemed to happen a lot more often on my 2011 Mac Mini when I still had it.

Going to take a wild guess that you ran the DASPI 1.4 package from MakeMKV (and perhaps also upgraded MakeMKV itself)?

If so, permissions fix would solve that.
