iPad with a MIDI keyboard?

I know you can connect a USB MIDI keyboard to the iPad with the camera connection kit.

However, I'd like to know if the following situation will work:

1. You have an app that has for example a virtual instrument of a piano and you can play it with your MIDI keyboard.
2. You switch to e.g. Safari so you can read a PDF of sheet music.

Is it possible to still hear sound from app one and keep playing in this situation or does it just cut out as you switch apps?

iOS supports background audio so it should depend on the app.
