This pic from apple's website should give you an idea. It's for the iphone but the iPad should give you about the same.

Just picked up a 16gb iPad mini today. The available space is 13.73gb
I was able to fit a bunch of apps (including some big games), all of my music, pictures and a couple HD movies on it. I still have a little over a gig of free space. |

You can tell iTunes to downsample your music all the way down to 128k when it's syncing so you can fit more on there.

The 8GB Nexus 7 only has 5GB free. Perhaps you saw that and assumed it was 16GB. And there are users quoting huge performance slow downs once there is only 2-3GB of free space left.
That means on the base model Nexus, you can only really use 2-3GB.

may be a dumb question, but how would the amount of storage effect the speed of the phone? I just think of other devices I have had (pc's, macs) and the speed is more dependent on the RAM and processor. I could fill up a hard drive and notice zero difference in speed

even though i dont know much about them I have read that solid state drives slow down once hitting 60-65% capacity. I do not know this from experience though....

I have not experienced this in my long history with solid state. Most likely this particular issue is a software bug or serious design flaw in some controller.

Mindful that 0 space is a far cry from what is plagueing the Nexus 7.

There were indeed complaints on xda, but I believe the 4.1.2 update fixed that problem.
