I thought it might be fun to upgrade my 2011 mini (2.5 GHz i5 with 4GB-2x2 memory & 500GB Hard Drive OSX 10.8.2) with a new SSD and more memory. I've been doing a bunch of reading to see what others have done and wondered if anyone would share their thoughts and/or opinions about the OWC option I'm considering.

OWC Data Doubler DIY Kit - $42
120GB Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD - $149
16.0GB (8GBx2) PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600MHz SO-DIMM - $97.50
Total price is $275

Questions I have include; Is this a good price for each of these products? What is the quality of OWC SSD and OWC memory? How hard is the install? (I did watch the OWC video and it didn't scare me too much) Do I really need 16GB of RAM?

I plan to keep the 500 GB in the mini, plus I have a number of external hard drives for pics, video and music, so I plan to use the SSD for the OS Applications, documents and media files I'm currently working on and store everything else on internal and external hard drives.

Thanks...

Does the Cruicial M4 come with the "cable" you need to attach it to the mother board? or does the cable that comes with OWC DIY tool kit http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMM11D2/ for their drive work? If not do you have a suggestion where to get one? thanks, been doing a lot more reading...

what are thoughts about just adding/swaping one 8gb memory for one of the 2gb in there, then I would have 10gb memory (8gb & 2gb) or am I just being cheapskate?
