Handbrake and 3D Animation Movies

I posted this in another thread figured I give it a try in this thread.

I have recently been ripping my DVD collection to my computer and using PLEX to play them on my XBOX and Roku. I haven't had any noticeable issues from the DVD until I started ripping some of my favorite PIXAR movies and shorts. The quality isn't terrible, but a lot of frames are very pixilated. I was wondering if anyone had encountered this and had a solution.

I encountered this my first time ripping a DVD (It was Up, another pixar film) and found that my resolution had been dropped from 856x480 (anamorphic widescreen) to 640x320. Check to see what the input/output is under the video settings and make sure you have ***x480 set as your resolution.

Another question to ask is are you using the Constant Quality setting or variable bitrate?

I am using Constant Quality.

You should be fine if you ensure the resolution is correct then. If you still have problems, try doing a VBR 2 pass encode and see if it will help (Id recommend at least 1500 bitrate for a DVD rip).

I am a bit confused about your recommendation. The source file is 720x480 and the default output file is 720x304. However, when I change the output file to 480 the file I get is extremely wide (anamorphic). If I turn off the anamorphic option the output file is stretched height wise.

I am using Handbrake.
FPS: Variable Framerate
Video Quality: Constant Quality
RF:19

I am using high profile with only a few modifications. I upped maximum B-Frames to 5 and using uneven multi-hexagon motion estimation method option.

I would suggest using anamorphic strict for you picture size setting. I have had pixelation problems in the past that were solved by using that instead of the "loose" setting.

The deblocking filter also might be of use in this situation. After that, I have no more ideas as I transcode my stuff for an aTV and setting for that may be different than for a Roku or XBOX

An activity log from HB posted on pastebin.com and linked here would be of immense help.

Fwiw, the deblock filter in HB is probably only going to hurt a pixar type film from dvd. Its mostly useful for a very blocky source which dvd almost never is. Its really for corner case situations like a very pixelated source (ie. one that shows a lot of blockiness on playback.

The activity log tells everything you set.

Sorry for confusing you. I suppose I should have asked this beforehand, but what kind of TV are you watching it on? Is it an HDTV or SDTV? Letterbox or Widescreen?

Also, listen to whatever dynaflash says. I'm constantly learning from his posts =]

Just by briefly looking at your log, the issue stems with that low bitrate that video file is getting. It's 697.59 kbps, and personally, I think it should maybe hit roughly 1,000 kbps for animation. So all you have to do is up the RF to 18, that way you can hit a higher bitrate. However, it's a hit or miss with animation since every single one of them is different, and one RF will work for one film, but an entirely different RF will work for another.

Also, if you're noticing these artifacts on your compute monitor, then I wouldn't worry about it. Judge it from your HDTV since your HDTV has the proper filters to filter out any off that stuff just by being able to get deep blacks, and it'll in turn hide those artifacts within a normal viewing distance. You're always going to see all those imperfections on your average monitor since no filtering is happening and your blacks aren't always black.

+1 I have had several movies that I was very disappointed to see blocking artifacts in after HB conversion (when viewed on my MBP). Viewed on my HDTV, they looked fine.

Hard to say frankly without actually seeing the source on the same tv. but why are you going to 5 bframes ? More bframes will only reduce your file size and bitrate and do nothing if not degrade your visual quality.

As mentioned try going to rf 18 and go to no more than the presets bframes=3.

I am wondering if the pixelation you are seeing from your HB encode on your hd tv is the same as the source dvd's pixelation on your HD tv.

Beyond the low final bitrate as pointed out I really don't see anything else glaring in your settings.

Does it show the same pixelation when viewed in another media play other than Plex ?

One other question: the title says "3D Animation Movies" ... does this mean you are trying to encode the 3D version of said movie ? If so there have been problems with HB (and x264) in properly presenting the 3D version of a movie ie. say like Polar Express which was released as a two disc set, one 2D and one 3D. The 3D version encodes like crap.

I think he just meant Pixar CGI animation films CGI vs. "old school" animation films. But I could easily be wrong.

In that case you probably want the anamorphic option. It is entirely up to you, but the anamorphic version is the one that will best fit your TV.

The key for what you are looking for, however, is most definitely bitrate. Your large amount of bframes probably aren't helping either as pointed out from other users.

Just for giggles sake, try doing an encode using the following settings:


  • 2-pass Variable bit-rate encode @ 1200kbps

  • Framerate -> Constant -> Same as Source

  • Fast Decomb

  • b-adapt=2 (Under Advanced -> x264 option strings)

Then reply with how your file turned out. You can also try (if you like) doing both resolution options. One with Anamorphic size (XXX x 480) and one with the standard size (720 x 3XX).

In fairness, the OP is already using the proper anamorphic as per:

The 352 height is a result of cropping which is appropriate, using custom anamorphic and bumping the height to 480 is simply asking HB to scale up the movies frame size, which is basically upscaling, yes, this will increase the resulting bitrate and final resolution however, it will pixellate. In other words, HandBrake can not make something there that is not in the source.

Increasing the quality via rf (as suggested rf 18) imo would be more appropriate, leave the anamorphic as is or switch to strict anamorphic (which in this case will not really make a difference). Just my .02.

Try this too!

And listen to Dyna about the anamorphic thing... These are things that still confuse me and the few DVDs I have (most things I bother ripping are in blu ray) are the "optimized for widescreen" style DVD's with the resolution set as 8XX x 480. If Dyna says it is supposed to be 720x3XX then he is right. :D

lol. I didn't say it should be 720 x 3xxx ;) in this case HB is using the sources filmed anamorphic size which is correct:

At any rate, the part being cropped (from a 480 height) is the black letterboxing that shows when you watch the original dvd on a widescreen tv in its native resolution, no sense encoding black bars after all. Increasing the visual picture artificially gets you ... no where actually. Anyway, I digress. In a nutshell in this case imo HB is doing *exactly* what it should be doing and is not the reason for the artifacts the OP is seeing.
