The "S" in iPhone

There was the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G"S", iPhone 4, iPhone 4"S", now the iPhone 5. I was thinking about this for a little while now - I'm thinking the "S" in the iPhone 3GS stood for style, 4S stood for Siri, and I wanna say that when the iPhone 5S comes out, it'll stand for secure or something similar. What do you guys think? Either it stands for something or it's just another way of saying "new iPhone" without progressing via the # system only.

According to the keynotes, it stood for speed.

It stands for speed, but there was a rumor that the 4S really meant "4 Steve".

They've done it twice. There is no evidence to say they will ever to it again.

S!=Style

We could have the 6, 5S, 5R, 5GT,... Just look at nVidia naming.

Wrong.

S in 3GS Stands for Speed.

S in 4S Stands for Siri.

Tim Cook confirmed this at All Things D this year.

Yes, this is correct. I thought this was common knowledge, obviously not.

Well the iPhone 5S... cannot be for "speed".

The 5 is extremely rapid and I don't think any apps make use of it yet.

Are there any games that take advantage of the extra grunt?

Only if your'e the kind of person to put all weighted value on the superficial aesthetics of the device, and not the significant feature changes internal.

4->4S for example was huge.
CortexA8 to CortexA9 microarchtecture
single core to dual core, introducing multithreading is a monumental boon to performance and responsiveness alone.
single antenna, to dual diversity antenna
~4mbps 3G to ~9mbps 4G
move to a dual core GPU OpenGL 2.1
8mbps 5 element lens camera
+software features like Siri

4 to 4S was worth it for the camera alone.

3G-> 3GS was huge too.
A faster procesor, better camera with auto focus + video, more RAM.
+ software like Voice Control & Compass

I'm sure there will be a 5S next fall but it can't really stand for "speed" this time, since the iPhone 5 is already so fast. There's not much need for more speed until apps come out that would take advantage of it.

There are very few (no?) apps that take advantage of the 5's full potential right now even.
