imovie and external drive

I don't have enough memory on my MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz Intel i7 to store the video to make an iMovie. I transferred the clips to an external drive and hoped I could still access them... but no luck. What do I have to do to correct this? Can I work off an external drive or not?

Btw, "memory" is not the same as "hard drive / storage capacity":

It is recommended, to have 10 to 20 % of the SSD/HDD's capacity unused.
The above links also apply to SSDs.
