OP, since the iPad is going to be used by the entire family I would go with the 3 since they most likely wont be able to tell the difference from the 3 to 4. Also, you could spend the extra $100 on accessories, just like you said. If it were just me, and me alone, I'd get the iPad 4 over the iPad 3 for personal reasons.

Yep, I agree. I think Apple rushed the 4 out primarily to lose the 30 pin connector more than anything else...

I think it depends on your use pattern. For me, there wasn't anything about the 4gen that would really improve my work flow, based on how I use my 3gen iPad. Unless the additional features really make a difference to you, I would save the 100 dollars.
