Entering a numerical value for text

I am organizing a football pool, and I would like to find a way to assign a team name a numerical value. For example, each person chooses 6 teams from different groups, and each team gets 2 points for a win. When I do the quarterly updates, I would like to be able to tell the sheet that each "San Fran" cell should equal '12' or each "Seattle" cell should equal '16'. I am not sure if this is possible, but any help would be greatly appreciated (and save me about 2 hours of data entry per quarter during the football season!). I have a good understanding of the Excel program, but I am not very good with the technical language that I have seen so far on these boards. I am running Office for Mac 2011. Thank you!

Sounds like you need to setup a separate table where you say what you have team names in the first column, then apply the values you want to each team in the second column.

Then use VLOOKUP to add those values to each persons team.

Or use google to find some templates.....

Moakesy is exactly on the right track suggesting a VLOOKUP, if you are not sure, here is how to set it up.

The first image represents your main sheet showing who picked which teams, the second image is your lookup table (sheet 2) where you enter the points for the teams. You could go further with this and enter the game schedule in the columns to the right (Game 1 - Column D, Game 2 - Column E etc..) and have a SUM statement in your points column (Column B) automatically adding up the points as you enter them.
