A new report from Taiwan says Apple will focus on upgrading the display in its next-generation iPad mini, while the fifth-generation (full-size) iPad will be lighter, thanks to backlighting enhancements.
The hit-and-miss DigiTimes cites Taiwan-based backlighting industry sources as saying that Apple's next-generation iPad mini will focus mostly on enhancing the device's display resolution.
While the sources couldnt pinpoint whether or not the display will be Retina-grade, the consensus is that it will indeed boast a 2048 x 1536 resolution at 326ppi (pixels per inch). The publication erroneously calculates the resolution at 2058 x 1536.
The pixel density would be 326 ppi, which is in line with the iPhone 5s pixel density.
The sources also said that Apple will restructure the lighting of the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad from two LED light bars to one in order to decrease the device's overall weight.
In other words, the fifth-generation iPad will be lighter not only because it will lack one lighting bar, but also because Apple has an opportunity to eliminate some of the ballast (reducing the size of the battery, perhaps).
Apple is not expected to introduce these devices any sooner than Spring 2013.
The Cupertino giant has moved to a faster refresh cycle with numerous products, including software, and word on the street is that the iPhone 5S will mark the same shift for the companys smartphone business this summer.
The iPad mini has received accolades from the tech industry for its lightweight design and portability, but the display is an area which most users would like to see improved.
Apples efforts will undoubtedly be geared towards this particular feature, regardless of what the companys Taiwanese suppliers have to say.
