Partition Failed Help.

i Have created multiple partitions for linux and windows on my 2011 macbook air and cant seem to delete any of them. It didnt install linux on the particualr partition i wanted so i decided to go in and erase them and start over. It says,

Partition failed with error: Unrecognized file system.

i have tryed deleting and resizing my partitions in OSX as well as a program in linux mint and both either freeze or say unrecognized file system. Im familiar with how to use bootcamp for the most part, but dont understand what this means usually. Any help would be appreciated. ill answer questions best i can.
