rMBP lags with microsoft excel, need help!

Hi guys, so i have a 15 rMBP 2.3ghz/16gbram, i'm doing RNA sequencing data analysis, which requires me to edit large excel files...10mb. every time i try to edit a box, it kind of lags behind...like i can type a word and it'll appear maybe 3-4 seconds later.

so my questions are:
1. is this because i don't have enough processing power? because it says i still have 12gb of ram free.

2. does anyone experience the same type of issue i have?

3. is this normally expected?

Your computer is top of the line, not the issue here. Excel for Mac can get _really_ slow if you don't treat your document right.

Just google excel performance tips and you'll get plenty of websites

And lets up the next Office (coming in 2013) won't have that problem.

Fixed.

Mind sharing a document? Biochemist myself and could take a look if it's slow over here as well.

wow, very nice guide, i'm trying to learn unix, i herd it's the way to go for RNA seq, galaxy is fancy and comes with a GUI, but unix will be better in the long term from what i was told...

For fun, I've imported a 700,000 records into Excel from a database in my lab. There is no lag of any sort (scrolling or typing in the data). It did, however, take me around 10 seconds just to save the file. It is 60Mb in size. The data is raw (no calculations of any sort). I can't share it either because it's confidential.

I suggest that you get the latest (edit: office) updates. Running Excel 2011, version 14.2.5 here.

i think i figured out what was wrong, excel is autosaving quite often...i don't know if it's possible for it to save after every move, but it seems like that's what it's doing...i noticed that everytime i copy a bar i can see the "save % bar" go from like 10%--->100%, but it does take a few seconds...i guess i have to make do...
