MacBook Pro vs new 2012 iMac
Hello,
I am unsure on whether to purchase the new 27" iMac baseline, or to buy the Non-Retina MacBook Pro 15" with either Hi-Res or Hi-Res antiglare. The specs are as follows; iMac - £1318 / $2130 2.9 GHz i5 2560x1440 IPS display 8GB RAM - 1TB 7200RPM HDD 660M GPU 512MB VRAM MacBook - £1395 / $2254 2.3 GHz i7 1680x1050 TN display 8GB RAM (aftermarket) - 500GB 5400RPM HDD 650M GPU 512MB VRAM My main questions are; 1. Would the iMac or Macbook be quicker for some of the following programmes; -Battlefield 3 (HIGH settings), Some Call Of Duty titles, Adobe CS suite, Aperture etc - not at professional level, student level. 2. If I was to buy a iMac now, then sell in 18 months when i go to University/College for a Macbook, would I lose out massively and is it therefore better to buy the MacBook now? 3. With much speculation of the non retina Macbook being scrapped at next update, is it worth not buying for that reason? 4. I would probably want to purchase a 27 thunderbolt display at next refresh, so factoring the cost of that in with the accessories needed for the laptop (case, etc) does the iMac represent better value for money? I'm open to any other suggestions for any other setup ideas, thanks for your time if you reply! |

I'm not sure either of the computers will be able to run BF3 on high settings. I have a Mac Pro and it has trouble with Black Ops on high. I would go with the Macbook. Heat might be a problem, but you'll lose quite a bit of money if you sell it a year after you've bought it. In both these cases, the GPU would be the bottleneck, what would slow the game down. Either computer would run the other non-game applications just fine.
I would also recommend not buying the Apple display. It looks nice, but all in all it is a mediocre display that costs $1000. I would buy a thunderbolt to dvi converter, then buy a display off Newegg or something and save 700 bucks. You could even use that money to buy a better Macbook.
