720p and 1080p movies look gorgeous on my current Macs (Macbook Air and non-Retina MBP)

but how will they look like on a Retina display ?

even more beautiful to watch or just normal because of the very high resolution of the Retina ?

Not as good as they don't contain enough pixel data even at 1080p Blue-ray. That does not mean they will look bad just not as good as a pixel to pixel screen ratio. A 1920x1080 screen is best to watch 1080p video from. 720 looks cloudy and out of focus. Same deal here. It has to rely on scaling.
