I have this cable for my Sony camcorder. I want to capture video from it. I have the new iMac 2012 without FireWire. I looked at the FireWire to thunderbolt adapter. Doesn't seem the same FireWire connector. What do I need to buy to capture video from it and what type of FireWire is mine see pic below.

As you can see, you have a Firewire 4-pin to 6-pin cable, thus you would need an adapter from Firewire 6-pin to Firewire 9-pin (do not know the price) or get a Firewire 4-pin to 9-pin cable (should cost around 10 USD), but know, that some have reported problems with Firewire 4-pin devices (Mini DV camcorders and such) to be recognised via Firewire 800 ports.

The one you're holding is Firewire 400. The older type of Firewire.

Edit: It seems I have been shown who is the boss

So are am better off buying a new 800 and 4pin?

Give it a try. You can pick one up for under £10 on eBay.

I had exactly the same issue with my new mid-2012 MacBook Pro, although that does have one FW800 port, but my Camcorder (Sony) had a FW400 cable (four pin to FW400).

I just bought a cheap cable from eBay, tried it, and it worked.
