Revised Mac mini now shipping?

According to a user submission, Apple has started shipping 1.5Ghz G4 Mac minis while still packaged in 1.42Ghz boxes. The system profiler shows the video card as a 64MB VRAM Radeon 9200, and an Dual-Layer 8x SuperDrive.

Mac mini upgrades were recently rumored in this page 2 post. The Apple online store still lists the mini as being offered with either a 1.25Ghz or 1.42Ghz PowerPC G4.

Here's to hoping, but I'm incredibly doubtful that Apple would do this without hint or mention to the customer.

that's completely stupid. why would they bother to upgrade the specs if they won't even change the lettering / numbering on the boxes to ADVERTISE the upgrade! Sounds like a whole lotta bullplop

That very same screenshot does not contain ANY information to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it came from a Mac mini.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe that Apple would be stealth-shipping 1.5 GHz Mac minis when NO part of the Apple web site mentions this.

Now this is a true definition of a "quiet update". Reporters, bloggers, ... please take note of this when you continue to report on so-called "quiet updates" in the future and keep things in perspective.

Interesting... if it's true it's nice that they went to 64mb VRAM, but kind of a weak video card upgrade... a 9200 with 256mb of VRAM is still a 9200. Should be a 9550/64mb at the least!

no way of verifying it I guess. if so that's one very quiet update. they didn't even tell the sticker people, their own stores or the buying public. Aside from 'de-emphasizing' expos as launch events, this would pretty much de-emphasize...well.. pretty much everything about a launch.

I'm the one who submitted the rumor. Posted at macnn.com forums as well. The box lists the machine as a 1.42 Ghz, so this is either a *very* quite rollout or a fortunate screw-up for my co-worker. This machine was actually received last week, but I wasn't able to set it up until today. Here are the screens:

I'm just waiting to see what's in store when Apple Intels hit the market before I consider going back to OS X. Really like the mini design and I hope it will be awesome when it goes Intel. They should constantly update the mini to make it more and more appealing

Then when I buy it, a few months down the road and they give it something special

I also saw a mention of Mac mini (late 2005)-Sep 05 at the AppleCare site. Obviously that must not be the July revision, but this month's update.

A Mac mini with faster HD's, and 1.5/1.42 G4's, DL DVD burner (which the iBook hasn't), 64MB 9200 and BT 2.0+EDR is a nice update in addition to the 512MB RAM the Mac mini got 2 months earlier.

Video MB have NOTHING to do with core image -_-

My revision B 12" powerbook with 32MB of video RAM can perform core image, but a GeforceTi with 128MB of video ram can't.

No, the video RAM has nothing to do with Core Image. Core Image support is defined by the shader capabilities of the GPU. The 9200 doesn't support whatever shader levels Core Image requires. The 9600 does, the fx5200 does, etc, but the 9200 does not.
