Just trying to get an idea of what people are doing.

I have a 16GB mini that is primarily for email, browsing, reading, etc. I do like to keep a few movies on it just for down times, or times I can't get Netflix.

Are you using SD Movies? HD Movies? I know the 1080 Movies are overkill on this screen resolution, but it seems they would still look better than the SD versions. Or do you go for economy of size and run the SD?

Thoughts?

If you're buying/renting from iTunes, I'd go with SD. If you're ripping them with Handbrake from your personal DVD collection, do the universal setting and those will look pretty good on the Mini and run about 900mb to 1.3gb each.

If you're encoding the files yourself, go for 480 wide and set the file size to 500MB in handbrake. Good compromise between resolution and not burning up all your iPad's capacity. I keep a stash of films I've encoded at those settings since they are a third of the size of full SD videos which at 1.5GB are just a bit too large for carrying around on a 16GB model.

It's better to convert a mp4 file in 720p resolutions. So there won't be any quality drop.

No only overkill but incompatible. The mini is not HD compatible so it can't play hi def movies.
Yes, yes it does, 720P HD and 1080P HD.

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG‑4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

1024x768 res on the mini, 720P is 1280x720.

OP,
While 720P is slightly overkill, I would still recommend it. If you need to conserve space, try lowering the video bandwidth on the Video tab. Try down around 700-1000kbps and see how the quality comes out.

Very true as I play my 1080P MP4's on my 64gb with no problem, although 3 movies does take nearly 30gb;/ eeeek;):apple:

Drop the bitrate. High Profile 1080P could be as much as 25mbps. While that's great for a 60" LCD... on a sub 10"... meh. Way too much.

1500-2000kbps video will get you about 1GB per hour of HD video, and not too space hungry, and still look fantastic on the compact display.
