Connect to 3.5 Jack speakers

Not looking at my Apple TV, but there are audio settings in the settings area I saw once looking around, maybe a setting in there?

I look under Video & Audio and there's nothing which configures the optical output to what I can find.

Looking at the specs and manual for the Bose speakers, it seems they don't even have an optical input, so that cable will be useless.

Yeah, you need a digital to analog converter to do what you want. Something like this:

I picked up something similar from a local Radio Shack, which was more expensive, but I didn't have to order it and wait for it to ship. I connected my daughters Apple TV to an old analog pro logic receiver this way.

EDIT: I believe the cable you bought is to connect the 3.5mm digital out from a Mac mini to the optical in on a surround receiver.

Would you still suggest buying the analog convertor - if so would I need to buy an another cables?

It would be easier and cheaper to just run an analog cable from the audio out or headphone socket on your TV to the Bose speakers.

You'll need stereo RCA to 3.5mm cable from the D/A converter to your Bose controller and an optical digital cable from the Apple TV to the D/A converter.

Yes, if the TV has analog outs then you might be able to connect to the Bose system that way. My daughter's didn't.

Do not pay 35 quid for a digital to analogue convertor from amazon, you'll find them much cheaper on ebay:-
