usb 3.0 problem :s

Go to System Preferences, hardware > USB...find your WD drive, what speed is it running at?

P.S. you didn't mention what MBP you have. Only MBP's after 2012 have USB 3.0.

Then your drive is slow.

Use Black Magic Speed Test app from the App store and post a screenshot here.

just because it has usb 3.0 doesn't mean you will get max 3.0 speeds, it is still limited by the hard drive inside it. seems about right for a 5400rpm 2.5" drive

USB 3.0 is just the interface between the enclosure holding the drive and the USB 3.0 port in your MBP.

The drive itself is most likely a 5400RPM drive, which will be the bottleneck. While it will be faster than USB 2.0 speeds, it won't be fast enough to completely fill a USB 3.0 pipe.

that's because it is just telling you that 5gb/s is the max limit of usb3.0, your computer is capable of that transfer speed, but your hard drive is not. No single hard drive or SSD will transfer at 5gb/s, you'd need a bunch of fast drives/ssds in RAID 0 just to get near 1gb/s

That is USB3's interface speed. You won't get that speed out of a spinning hard drive.

The absolute max speed you're likely to get out of a SATA spinning disk (like, say my 3.5" western digital black) is roughly 100 megabytes/sec or so.


Also MB/sec (bytes) vs Mb/sec (bits).

If you were running USB 2, that is 480 megaBITS per second link speed, in reality nearer 320 megabit throughput. If your drive was running at USB2 speed you would be getting less than 40 megabytes per second. To convert bits/sec to bytes/sec divice by 10.

Yes, there are 8 bits to a byte but there's a bit of signalling overhead and divide by 10 is roughly accurate once that is taken into account and easy to calculate in your head.

You're getting nearly double that.

That seems fine for a mechanical drive.

If you get an external USB 3.0 enclosure like and pop in an SSD you will definitely get 300MB/sec+ for read and write.

USB 3.0 breaks USB 2.0 limits and FW800 limits. It doesn't mean that your drive is fast enough for the interface to be maxed out.

No, your HDD is being maxed out by the interface, not the other way around.

If you get something like this, then you will definitely push your USB3.0 port to it's max. They even have a thunderbolt version.

The connection between the hard drive and your computer is the full USB 3.0 5GB/s. The problem is that the hard drive itself is not capable of putting out those kinds of speeds.

Putting a fast solid state drive in the same enclosure should result in much faster transfer speeds.

75 mb/s Read/Write? Your external hard drive is within spec. That is the range of values you should receive with USB 3.0 + a 5400RPM hard drive.
