Is Keka free or does it cost $1.99?

On Macupdate website Keka is free, but on App store it's $1.99. Anyone know why?

It seems to be an open source project: http://trac.kekaosx.com/

Since it is also donation ware, and using the App Store costs money, the developers probably decided to get money that way. There are many new Mac users, who exclusively use the MAS to get apps, since they are used to it via the iOS App Store.

How upset would you be to pay $1.99 on App Store and later learn it's freeware! Would feel cheated and deceived and ripped off!

Not for 1.99 USD, and in the end it would be my "fault" anyway, as I did not do enough research.
But feeling cheated or deceived or ripped off or all three of them for 1.99 USD is a bit much.

Don't think it as a rip off. Think the freeware one as a gift. They're kind enough to give it away for free. So be kind enough to think your 2 dollar as a donation.

Asking for donation is fine. Charging for your work is fine. However, IMO, they should not be charging for open source application on MAS especially since there is no cost if the app is free (on MAS). I understand developers need to get something back for their work and the price is minimal...but it is misleading practice.

Aren't there costs for developing or being a developer developing for the MAS? I am currently unsure and too tired to work it out (or too lazy to actually search myself )?

Of course there are costs, as everything in life. Nothing is free. But it is an open source project, isn't it? Thus is voluntarily. MAS operational costs are non-existent (per Apple, at least) if the app itself is free on MAS. If it is not then they just split the revenue 70/30.

I just think it is a bit misleading doing it this way. But it is personal opinion rather than a fact.
