New iPods and Pro Machines?

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

Appleinsider claims that Apple will be introducing new iPods and Pro Macs in October.

The 5th generation iPods will revise the hard drive based iPods and are rumored to provide improvements in size/form factor. The new iPods are believed to utilize a higher density 1.8" Hard Drive from Toshiba which are available in 40 and 80GB sizes.

Also expected soon are upgrades to the PowerMacs and PowerBooks, but little definitive information is available on these upgrades. Appleinsider previously expected hardware announcements at Apple Expo Paris. Other sites also predicted PowerBook updates for Paris... but no hardware announcements came at the expo.

Dual-core PowerMac updates have been rumored since the announcement of Dual Core PowerPC chips from IBM.

I'm not expecting much from the PowerBooks--but get them out so we can move on to Intel PowerBooks at MWSF (I can dream, can't I?)

The new PowerMacs could be great, though--and if they've gotten the full-size iPods smaller, that certainly makes the iPod Mini even less necessary.

I bet full-size iPods will be available in black (non U2).

I don't expect video functionality--or at least, not as any big deal. Maybe as just another extra in a bullet list. It would be cool, but less useful than photos even, for most people. So I expect the iPod will stay music-focussed. No models that put video ahead of music.

podfuture has me wondering, though Apple sometimes does something new that makes sense in unexpected ways. Like iTMS, for one.

If this is true, I'll be getting 40 gig Video iPod!

im guessing that the PowerBook will have an 80gb minimum. if they're aesthetically changing the PowerBook then it must be for a big internal overhaul. i dont want to get stoned to death here but G5? or Dual Core G4? something that warrants a case change. maybe its a new hotter video card instead?

loving all this though! an 80gb iPod is the only thing id replace my 6gb mini for. if its got a better battery than a mini then i'll cry and get one

No, not quite. I guess we could expect...a 15% decrease in size?

Intel sucks (X86 for that matter).

X86 has a nasty glitche: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Murphy/index.php?p=431

I wanna see a Dual 2, 3, or 4 Core 4ghz+ PowerPC G5 + a Cell co-processor on the Powermac.

Cell is the future: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/09...iba_cell_mobo/ and somebody should port darwin to the Cell. If they are going to break the binary might as well fix the threading problem in Mac OS X http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2520

Steve Jobs won't use cell because apparently it isn't a good general purpose processor. Let's face it, we are stuck with intel for at least a few years. Let's just hope they produce something that can change some of our minds on them.

Personally, I think they'll do as they did with the photos at first, and they will be above the current price points. I'm guessing, perhaps $399 and $499.

However, I hope I'm wrong. My hope is that we'll see them start at $299, but I don't really see it happening.

I wonder if they will change nano pricing when they release the new models?

One more thing...

It HAS to be the iPod video.

Why?

1) Steve Jobs always uses the phrase "One more thing..." before releasing something radically new. A simple iPod hard drive capacity update wouldn't be too radical.
2) Instead of a jeans pocket or something they chose a theater curtain. What else would be most related to a theater curtain than a movie?
3) The iTMS has been selling music videos for a while now. They can't wait too long or people would just forget about it.
4) If they are ever going to release it, that would have to be now or before the Intel Inside Macs. If they release it at the same time of the Intels, it would just get lost in all the new processor hype; if it was after the Intels, it would be too old of an idea to release it.

The rest of the article is a mixture of similarly twisted mis-facts and opinions based on those mistakes.

Whoa, that article is so wrong on so many levels!

- Xbox 360 does NOT use G5!

- So Windows is a bug-ridden nightmare because of hardware it runs on? Uh, OK....

Instead of thinking "what about WiFi iPods?", how about Bluetooth instead? I know what you are thinking : "Bluetooh is slow! Do you have any idea how long it would take to sync the iPod using the Bluetooth?". Yes, BT is slow. But WiFi is a battery-hog. And think about this scenario:

the initial sync of the iPod is done with regular cables. From then on, there would only be incremental updates. And the moment you would step to your home, your iPod would pick up the Bluetooth-network in your home, and start syncing your collection. All 100% transparently.

I wouldn't be one bit surprised if Apple introduced WiFi-AP's which would be Bluetooth-AP's as well .

Question

I've got just over 14GB of free space on my iPod Photo...so for the time being no go on a new photo....in point of fact the opportunity to purchase Apple Care for my photo is down to a matter of weeks....can't decide if I want to drop $100 on an iPod that has been working fine for close to a year...hmm

As for the PowerBooks....another speedbump in the winding down coil that is the G4....Nothing to see here...move along.

new but addicted...

Just joined, but I have been addicted to this forum for weeks now. I plan on buying a new powermac and powerbook b4 december. Just recently sold my pc and vaio laptop to migrate mac. Without a computer of my own i feel like i'm in freefall. I hope these updates happen soon, plus I don't think my girlfriend will keep letting me steal her ibook!

If they increase the FSB to 200Mhz, L2-cache to 1MB and make some other improvements, it would be a nice update. Add to that a new screen (hopefully), new vid-card and few other improvements, and you would end up with a very nice machine .

PB's are very nice machines the way they are. Better screen would make turn them in to a truly kick-ass machines.

As long as you're not holding your breath. Freescale released something recently that suggested that dual-core G4 wouldn't be out until mid-2006.
