Nikon D700 issues

Have any Nikon DSLR owners experienced the following. I purchased from
Nikon a refurbished D700 in June 2012. Because it had been discontinued,
inventory in retail stores was dried up and the only way one could still get
one was through Nikon's factory outlet refurbished. With the excellent reviews
and a price of under $2000.00 I decided to get one while still available. Less than 6 months later I have had to send it to Nikon for "err" messages appearing in the viewfinder. The shutter was replaced along with some minor parts and
after 10 days the "err" message re-appeared.
It has been repaired now twice for the same problem and I am awaiting delivery hoping the problem is solved once and for all. Has anyone with
full frame Nikon's experienced this problem?

Err messages in the viewfinder seem unusual.

I've never had this issue - I've used D700 for a long time along with the D800e and the D3s, all of them FX. Nikon should be able to get it sorted for you.

What lens were you using with the camera? Was it a "D" type Nikkor (with the aperture control ring)?

Re: D700 issues

Since I posted this I have received my D700 back and used it last night
photographing my grandsons Flag football game last night along with
experimenting taking pics of flowers close up. The lens I used at the
football game was the 70-200mm f2.8 VRI. The same lens I was using
when "err" messages were appearing. The other lens was the new FX 24-85mm
f3.5 and the same problems occurred before.

Nikon repaired the Aperture operation and replaced the aperture lever along with adjusting the angle of the mirror. So far its working fine but it worked fine for 10 days after it was repaired the first time, so we will see.

Since you have used the D800 and I have been looking at it, what is your opinion?

I'm really surprised by this. My D700 has never failed me in 4 years. I even NEVER cleaned the sensor other than with the built in feature, and dust spots are still close to none. I only have sticky buttons sometimes (after the kids used it), but they loosen up after a few days.
The D800 is delivering a stunning image quality, especially the D-range is fantastic, but the default 36mpixel is often too much. It does not have small-raw like many Canons have. It is really a miss.
The D800 killed many CF cards, a weird issue with that camera, and an expensive one as you need the fastest cards to work nice with that camera.
Using them together is annoying, as the buttons on both are reversed.
The D800 is lighter, but I also like the TANK feel of the D700.

I have a D700. Had it for several years. Very, very solid camera. I would buy another for a second body without a moments hesitation.

Although very annoying that you are having these problems, the fact you bought the camera factory refurbished from Nikon, with some kind of warranty means that you can keep sending thew camera back until it is perfect. I'm sure Nikon will get to the bottom of the problem. They may already have, let's hope!

This error shows up fairly frequently on new Nikon DSLR cameras that have oily contacts from the manufacturing process.
