My iTunes and Mail stopped working

Yea so I'm having a little trouble here with my macbook pro. I'm fairly good with computers and have never had a problem like this. But about 3 or 4 days ago my mac froze so I restarted it. After the first couple of restarts everything was still running extremely slow so I turned it off and left it alone. I waited a couple of hours and turned it back on. Everything is running back to normal except I can't open iTunes or Mail. If I click either icon it will bounce up and down in the dock for a couple seconds and then disappear. If anyone has any explanations please let me know. Thanks

How old is it? Sounds like the HDD might be going.
