What is 694-4576?

I always see this number in the comments of every Macintosh HD I come across.
Anyone have any idea what it means? It looks like a phone number.

That is odd. Perhaps the Apple internal part number? If it is a phone number, try calling it. It might be an 800 number, but if not, the area code for cupertino is 408.

Holy cow, you're not the only one? 😱 I thought it was just the ones at my office, like maybe a previous tech had put his phone number in the comments field of the HD for future reference.

oh well

i'm surprised not more prople are familiar with this. Almost every mac I've been on has this phone number on it. My iMac and my beige g3 has it but not the PBTI.
Strange.
 
my g3 imac does not have a phone number on it, but i did reformat my hard drive a few months ago, perhaps the data was lost then.

ohhh...maybe this is the starting point to the online release of the ultimate mac. Much like BMW interactive release of the Z4, you call the number, it gives you a name, you search, find info, put the pieces of the puzzle together only to discover that the plot thickens even more. Eventually, every one who's gone through the puzzle ends up on the front of 1 infinite loop at 3:19 AM on the last sunday of spring and we all get abducted by a big UFO shaped like an apple.



or, maybe it's just a part number.....
 
its not a phone number. its been there for years and years. I forget what it is right at the moment, but I've definiltey read abuot it and what it is. Its certainly not a phone number or anything exciting at all really.
 
It's the IDE/ATA serial number.

"For a good time, call Apple..."

not true... i live in canada... bought my mac in canada, and mine says it too.

I tried the 408 area code but it just tells me the number is out of service. The 800 number is kinda mysterious, it asks me to punch in a code so i punch in the number again and then it just rings and rings.
 
Mine is 694-4603, this is quite strange. I'll have to check my other machine to see what it has.

Has anyone thought to look and see if the 694 is even in the 408 area code?

WHAT THE HELL!

I called the number (694-4756) through 1800. So it was 1800-694-4756.

It rang then said to enter the numeric message at the tone. I entered 1234 and it said "your message has been sent. Thank you"

Kinda strange huh?
 
My older mac G4 with 2 scsi drives doesn't have any numbers on them, as well as my firewire drives. And yes this is weird.

MacAztec - sounds like the number you called was pager number. Maybe you should call again and leave your number and see if anyone calls back 😉

seriously tho, i remember seeing this on a lot of older macs, i always wondered but never realized it was the same (i assumed it was a serial number or something)... i had totally forgotten about that...

Yeah, I have a number too. I just looked at it and it's different than the other ones, but it's there. I don't think their phone numbers, rather part numbers for the hard drives.
