Depends, on most computers I either don't run untrusted code (Applications) or scan the files with VirusTotal.com.

AVG is a good anti-virus software to run in your windows. It doesn't chew up CPU and it's free http://www.avgfree.com
Have to disagree here, it used to be good years ago, but over the years they also added to much crap, it now too uses too many resources.
