Question about fonts in Photoshop

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I haven't been able to find an answer to it. Why is it that when I'm using Photoshop, I only see about 1/5 of all the fonts that are installed on my system when using the text tool? I just installed a TrueType font that I downloaded, and it doesn't show up in Photoshop, but it does show up in Illustrator. The same font doesn't show up in Fireworks either, but if I download and install the Windows version of the same font, it does show up in Fireworks (looks like garbage when I go to use it though). Any ideas? I don't know much at all when it comes to fonts and typography, even though I find it all very interesting.

I'm not sure if this answers your question but Adobe applications will group font families.
For instance rather than having a whole listing of 'Myriad Regular, Myriad Semi-bold, Myriad, etc) it'll just be listed as Myriad and have next to it another drop down that has all the styles.

Thanks snkTab, I took a PS class last semester but I guess I got a really lame teacher-- I never knew that! You really do learn something new everyday.

I wouldn't put all of the blame on your teacher. I've never taken a Photoshop class but I knew that about the font families from just playing with the app a lot.

Also, not sure if this will help, but after installing a new font, restart photoshop. Could help?

Frankie is correct in this, since Photoshop will load fonts at launch. Also, if you have too many fonts, you can use font book to disable ones you don't use. This has the effect of shortening the load times of these apps and it also speeds up overall performance of your computer.

Personally, I loaded a crap load of fonts of my girlfriends computer and it screeched to a halt. After a long slow time, I finally disabled some of her fonts, it got faster, disabled more, it got faster, disabled all, it went fast. Now on my computer, I keep only a select few that I always use open.

Hmm, I thought I had already tried that, but just now I started Photoshop up and the previously unusable font is there in the font menu just like it should be. Thanks for the help.

Excuse me to post in this thread, but I have some difficulty to open a new thread, since my english is a shame.
i have a iMac 500, running OSX 10.3.9, and using a Photoshop CS2. Suddenly, the small fonts, minuscules, became capitals; example, a font like Geeva; the "a" is round; now, when i type the "A", he appears as a capital, but small; is a real geneva letter, but not the "real" minuscule a. I tried using a font manager, from Linotype, but onthing happened. It occurs with all fonts, just in Photoshop; other programs are ok. Some help?

I noticed this too. I use Photoshop CS on both Windows and on Mac. On Windows, I have about 1,200 fonts installed in my system and when I use the Character pallete, all the fonts show up (grouped by font family). On my Mac, though, I have about 570 fonts installed (according to the Font Book). When I use Photoshop CS on my Mac, only my A-T fonts show up on the Character pallete. Fonts U-Z don't show up anymore. When I went to Font Book and disabled several fonts, that's when the rest of the fonts showed up. Is this normal? Does Photoshop CS on a Mac have a limit on how many fonts it can load? Not that I really need all those fonts that I have. I'm just curious.

snkTab, thanks for the advice. I should really keep the fonts I don't need disabled. Makes life easier for me. I'm glad we have this option on Mac since I can't bring myself to delete the fonts.

lots of fonts loading will drag a machine down.

i have TONS of fonts, but only run the basics and a handfull of "specialty" fonts.... the rest are disabled. Then if i am doing a job that i need a different font for, i just go into fontbook and activate it, restart PS or Illustrator, and its there to use.
