Airport Express With Video?

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

Along with reports of an upcoming video-capable iPod, AppleInsider claims that Apple is set to release a new wireless device like the Airport Express.

The new box is rumored to have video-out capability, offering wireless video feed to a television or other display.

As AI claims, it is unclear as to whether the release of this device will coincide with the release of the video iPod, or stand alone at its own unveiling.

That's weird. I don't think that 802.11g has the bandwidth to do video yet. What software application would be the conduit to stream to the Airport Express?

Replacing or augmenting current iPod / APXpress

Wondering if these reports are true, will they replace current models or supplement them? And what's the possibility of a Flash-based video player? Is that crazy? Just crazy enough for SJ to pull it off, I say.

Hell yea we need that.... if only to look cool! In reality how much of these gadgets do we really need? So I say bring it on Uncle Steve, if you've got the product I've got the cash.

I guess people might be interested in streaming video--music being more of the interest with streaming content. I would think this might take a year or two to really catch on though.

Good question. If they are using H.264 to compress it then the base station must have a powerful chip for decompression.

It doesn't. BUT 802.11n, which is the next standard, does. Many companies already have "pre-n" routers out. The next Airport products will be "pre-n" and probably firmware upgradable to "n" once its officially adopted.

I want this, NOT a video iPod

Who cares about watching The Incredibles on a 4" screen. I just don't see myself doing that, ever, no matter what. But I'd love to rent "The Incredibles" for $2.99 for a week instantly (BitTorrent?) and stream it to my TV using the new Airport Express (MIMO?). No "Only 9 copies per Blockbuster", no waiting, and lots of other video content (TV shows $.99 to own?). Hell yeah!

I thought the possibilties of this happening were explained many months ago.
H.264 would be great for this and YES this does have purpose. I'm only concerned about licensing issues that Apple may have to apply if any kind of copyrighted content will be streamed.

Once the iPod has been connected to a TV, the player will somehow function in firewire hard disk mode, sources said. Users will then have be able to display video clips located in the iPod's 'movies' directory — such as movie trailers and personal iMovie creations — on the television screen. Likewise, sources said that the new player, along with its rumored color screen, will also allow users manage or preview photos on the iPod display or TV screen.
I'm thinking something like a wireless TV set-top box that connects to the iPod, allowing you to playback on the TV and record TV...

I am wondering if Kasper, over at Insider is using Macrumors as his source

The Airport update is real. He has other sources.

I don't think even apple could overcome the synch issues inherant with breaking up the conduits like that. And i doubt you can even tell if there is a rear center channel. Seriously.

This would be great. All too often I have to end up watching movies on my iMac b/c my dvd player skips (haven't found a great dvd player yet...on number 4 since 2000)...so this would save me some time. Plus I could preview iMovie/FCP projects on a TV prior to burning them to DVD.

I guess it's for people who can afford Macs and WiFi hubs but can't spare $30 for a DVD player. AirTunes makes some sense, there's smallish storage involved. But the TV thing is just weird, Apple aren't exactly shipping the word's largest hard drives in most of their machines.

Not HD-content, but it should be able to stream non-HD video - that takes just a few MBps. I believe a DV stream from a digital camcorder is about 3 - 4 MBps if I remember correctly.

I would be among the first to buy one of these if it can stream video from my powerbook to my TV instead of having to plug it in...

Yeah, if it has H264, wouldn't a wireless-g network be sufficient for such streams? You can have high quality in relatively low size, with MPEG4.
