I use my 1,1 for music production and it's starting to chug...(imagine that after 7 years)...Anyway, there's a 4,1 for $799...

So -
2.66 Xeon Dual core vs. 2.66 Nahelem Quad Core

1,1 has 5 gb ram 4,1 4 gb ram

Would I see performance improvements? Worth upgrading?

You'd definitely see a performance boost. The 4,1 2.66 is about 65% faster than the 1,1 2.66 and $799 is a great deal. They're still going for $1000-$1300 on eBay.

Plus: With the 4,1 RAM is cheaper, Mountain Lion works, and almost any nVidia graphics card will plug-and-play.

Huge. especially if you up the single-chip 4,1 to one of the 6-core speeder chips. well worth it if you're getting it that cheap in the first place. where are you in the world that that is the going rate? they're still spendy here (Toronto)

I have a 1,1 that i'm about to mod to x5355 just so I can get it to run percussion or something else via lightpipe. the only downside to the machine is the price of ram...

Definitely a deal at that price, the upgrade options on the 4,1 model are enormous, definitely grab it if you still can.

I have been researching possible CPU upgrades fro my 2006 1,1 and thought that the only options are quad core 2.66 GHz X5355 or quad core 3.0 GHz X5365 in the X53xx Clovertown series. I do not claim any real expertise here but I question if the Nehalem cpus can be used.

BTW I have ordered a pair of X5355s to replace my dual core 2.66Ghz at a cost of about $175.

No. X5365's are as "high" as you can go in the 1,1's.

very worth it, I would JUMP on that! Then you can get a HEX core chip for it for around $500. Add in more RAM and a GTX 5xx/6xx and you are golden.
