Download Question

Hello-

I'm about to buy some software for a Garmin GPS, it allows you to preplan a course on water then download to you Garmin GPS. You can download over the net or buy it in a MicroSD/SD card. I would prefer the card. I see a small slot under the DVD/CD slot, is that what that slot is for? Can I buy it & download it to my iMac in this method?
