Panetta opens combat roles to women

Yahoo
Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior defense officials say Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is removing the military's ban on women serving in combat, opening hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war.

The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta's decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.

A senior military official says the services will develop plans for allowing women to seek the combat positions. Some jobs may open as soon as this year. Assessments for others, such as special operations forces, including Navy SEALS and the Army's Delta Force, may take longer.

The official said the military chiefs must report back to Panetta with their initial implementation plans by May 15. The announcement on Panetta's decision is not expected until Thursday, so the official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Panetta's move expands the Pentagon's action nearly a year ago to open about 14,500 combat positions to women, nearly all of them in the Army. This decision could open more than 230,000 jobs, many in Army and Marine infantry units, to women.

In recent years the necessities of war propelled women into jobs as medics, military police and intelligence officers that were sometimes attached — but not formally assigned — to units on the front lines.

Women comprise 14 percent of the 1.4 million active military personnel.
Should be fine I think. G.I. Jane comes true!

The training is tough sure... heck I'm pretty sure even most of the men that try out get cut... if a gal can do it, might as well let them. I'd wash out getting a paper cut filling out a form.

Long overdue, IMO. Seems like a move in the right direction, provided that standards aren't lessened in any shape or form just to meet some arbitrary ratio.

Oh. I agree whole heartily . If they can handle the fire they would be standing in along with the men then they deserve it.

But I know from personal experience that 25 out of 30 don't make it all the way through the process.

That's very interesting, had no idea that was coming. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

I noticed it in 2003, you'd go onto AKO and the biggest forum debate was always should we allow women in the Infantry..

It had to break at some point there are just too many superstar female soldiers to my Infantry a boys club.

The real question here is are we going to finally make women register for the draft?

A welcomed but largely irrelevant move, for I fear at some the fighting is going to be done by machines, either controlled remotely or fully autonomous.

I'd rather see the draft registration eliminated altogether.

It will never work. Women are the weaker sex. They are far better suited to be a teacher.

Oh yeah, and to be armed and expected to be able to stop crazies from shooting up schools with semi-automatic weapons.

me too, actually, but if it's going to stay, I think women need to be included.

Will women be able to fly drones into combat? Or do they do that already?

I'm glad the infantry is going to be left out..

There are plenty of women that can handle the job, I'm sure we can get over the hygiene issues also.

I guess I need to get in touch..

This is good, as long as they keep the standards the same and don't set the bar lower for women to get in than men so they can get more women.

Completely agree. They aren't lowering the standards so if a woman is able to get through that training I see nothing wrong with this.

There's a reason why females aren't in combat roles. But, I'm not against it. Combat Support has females in it (ie: medics, MP's) and they deploy and go out of the wire.

I was going to say great. I do undestand that this is a mile stone in equal rights.
But i wish instead of women getting geting a chance to experince combat, that nobody had to go through that man or woman. (Or drone)

Just like there was a reason gays weren't allowed to serve in the military?

What reason would that be? And surely you realize that there are other countries where women do serve in combat?
