Keeping WIFI Connected When Closed MBP

My girlfriend's 2011 MBP keeps wifi connections even when you shut the lid. When the computer is re-opened, the computer is ready to go. Wifi is connected, no delays.

However, on my 2010 MBA, and my 2012 MBP, when I open the comp and raise the lid, I have to wait for the computer to re-connect to wifi, and there's usually a delay while the clock catches up and the comp "wakes up." Any suggestions? I figure it's gotta be something in power settings but I know my MBA is set to not "Put hard disks to sleep when possible."

It's a feature of the 2011-and-newer MacBook Pros. The older ones don't have that capability when asleep. (*AWAKE* with the lid closed, sure, but not asleep.)

So how do I enable that on my MBP (2012)? When I open it oftentimes I still have to wait for the connection to establish itself again.

My 2011 MBP does the same thing.

How long does yours take to re-connect to wifi?

5-10 seconds maybe, the wifi icon is grey when opened, my girlfriend's computer doesn't seem to ever lose the connection.
