How long should a Mid-2010 MBA get updates?

Minor updates are free. Major revisions (Mountain Lion, Lion, for example) are generally $20.

To give you an idea, my old macbook (first aluminium unibody) from late 2008 came with 10.5.5 and died with 10.8.2. I upgraded it from 2GB RAM / 250GB HD to 8GB / 256GB SSD. I don't think it would have run as well if it were on its stock specs.

I'm hoping my 2012 air lasts until 10.11.

Well, Lion was $30, then Mountain Lion was $20. Before they they used to cost upwards of $100. We could be moving toward a very low cost, download-only OS policy, which is what Apple does with iOS already.
