iPhone 4S contact lost/missing??

Hello! i am having a problem with my iPhone 4s.. i just recently noticed that may contacts are just staying at 40.. even though i add contacts they don't show up and the phone just say that it still have 40 contacts .. anyone know how to fix this ?
